Comparative budgetary, fiscal, and macroeconomic policy, with an emphasis on the United States, the European Union, Iraq, and Japan

Research Description

My research and teaching focus on comparative budgetary, fiscal, and macroeconomic policy, with an emphasis on the United States, the European Union, Iraq, and Japan. I am particularly interested in the development of macrobudgetary rules, procedures, and institutions in these countries, and how they influence fiscal outcomes. My current research is focused on the refugee/migration crisis in Europe. My question is simple: How much is the European Union spending to address this crisis? How much does it cost these governments to provide housing and care for the refugees/migrants? How much does it cost them to control the EU?s borders? How much does it cost the EU to get other countries, like Turkey, to help the EU?

UNLEASH

I am looking for undergraduate students who will help me answer these questions. I am looking for undergraduate students who will be in Charlottesville this summer after the term ends. If you are interested in this project, contact me at jds2y@Virginia.edu
