Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program

The Faculty of the Department of Urology is pleased to announce a training program for nurse practitioners.

This one-year fellowship training was designed by an interdisciplinary team of urologists and nurse practitioners within the Department of Urology. Fellows begin the program July 1 and end the program June 30. The goal of this program is to prepare you to move confidently into practice in a community-based urology clinic or university-based urology division or department.

The Urology Nurse Practitioner Fellow will gain knowledge and skills in a range of critical areas of in urologic practice including oncology, urinary stone disease, neurological and female urology, andrology, and pediatric urology. You will have a unique opportunity to learn with a Urology Department with a rich history of interdisciplinary practice with 6 Urologic Nurse Practitioners and 9 Urologic Surgeons. Your principal faculty mentors will be Mikel Gray, PhD, NP and Terran Sims, MSN, NP (senior Nurse Practitioners practicing in the Urology Department ) and Ryan Smith, MD, Director of our Residency Training Program.

Approximately 13,000 outpatients are seen in our department each year. The average inpatient census is approximately 15 with 1,900 new admissions per year. Pediatric urology represents 20 percent of admissions. Formal didactic opportunities include two urology conferences each week, Tumor Board, and teaching rounds.  You will practice in both outpatient and inpatient environments and several community based outreach locations in Virginia.
