The Department of Urology at the University of Virginia has earned a reputation as one of the premier programs of its kind in the world. Its uniqueness stems from the “bench-to-bedside” approach to urologic disorders and depth of accomplished academic faculty. The Department ranks among the top echelon of urologic academic research institutions in America . US News and World Report ranks the department in the top 20 in the United States . The composition of this clinical Department (not Division) is unique and attests to its commitment to research and teaching. Among the faculty are the current head of the American Board of Urology, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Urology, and awardees of organized urology’s highest awards (Gold Cystoscope Award, Hugh Hampton Young Award, Raymon Guitteras Award, Zimskind Award in NeuroUrology, Ginestie Award in Impotence Research, and Dornier Innovative Research Award). Our faculty have served as presidents of the American Urologic Association, the Society for Basic Urologic Research, the American Fertility Society, the Society for Reproductive Research, and the Andrology Society.
As a result of its international reputation, the Department has been able to attract the highest quality basic scientists, physicians, residents and fellows to pursue its mission of finding cures for urological disorders. Indeed, urologists and scientists from around the world view the Department as a resource for genitourinary research and arrange formal visits by academicians from the European Union and Asia .

- Medical Students – Please note all students (3rd and 4th year) should report to 5 West Nurses’ station at 6:30 a.m. on Monday morning to meet with the residents. If the students are late or cannot find anyone, they should call urologist on call 1586.
