Diversity & Inclusion

The University of Virginia Department of Urology is dedicated to promoting diversity and building a culture of inclusion and respect toward all individuals of all backgrounds. Our goal is to ensure all residents, no matter their race, sexuality, country of origin, gender, or religion, feel welcomed and included at UVA. Within the Department of Urology, we hold resident/faculty sessions on unconscious bias and mindfulness to promote an inclusive environment. We encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

Our Department features two D&I titans, Dr. Nora Kern and Dr. Tracy M. Downs. Dr. Kern is the Associate Program Director for the Urology Residency as well as the Diversity Facilitator of the Department. As Chief Diversity & Community Engagement Officer for the University, Tracy M. Downs, MD, FACS, is UVA Health’s leading voice on diversity, equity and inclusion. Within UVA Health, he guides efforts to ensure an inclusive, optimal and respectful learning, training and working environment. Within the greater Charlottesville region, and across the broader state of Virginia, he works collaboratively to improve community health and well-being by decreasing health disparities.
