Free Prostate Screening

About

Free prostate cancer screenings are performed by a urologist in the U.Va. Urology Department, in September of each year.  For more information on the next screening day, please contact (434) 924-9561.

The Urology Department, in partnership with the Department of Pathology, is offering this free exam and blood test to screen for prostate cancer in men between the ages of 50 and 70.  Men over 40 who have family history of this disease, or who are African American are also encouraged to participate.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men.  One in 8 men will get prostate cancer in his lifetime.  Among African Americans, the ratio is one in six.  A simple exam and blood test may detect prostate cancer at an early and curable stage.

Parking in the hospital garage on Lee Street and on Hospital Drive will be free that day.  A hospital shuttle will run between the parking garage and the Urology Department entrance on Hospital Drive that morning in case you bring a disabled friend or relative.   In the past, most men arrived in the first 1 l/2 hours of screening, so to minimize your waiting time, consider arriving after 8:15 a.m.

The Urology Department is located in the West Clinics, 2nd Floor (Old Ground Floor) of Hospital West (signs will be posted giving you directions to the Department of Urology).  For more information, please call (434) 924-9561.
