Read the Full ReportThe year 2023 has been particularly meaningful to me as I complete my 5th year as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. It creates an opportunity for me to reflect on all of the changes that have taken place since I arrived, including stepping into a new role as Chair and dealing with the profound physical and emotional toll of COVID on our lives, particularly as primary care providers.

In October, 2022, thanks to abating COVID restrictions, we were able to celebrate a milestone for the department and the profession of Family Medicine – UVA Family Medicine’s 50th Anniversary. Even through the threat of a hurricane, we experienced the warmth and comradery of spending time with current and former faculty, staff, residents, alumni and friends.

COVID-19 has intensely affected all of us in so many ways, yet it has also reminded us of the essential value of primary care, the pressing need to address significant health disparities among people of color, and the necessity to more effectively meet the needs of our vulnerable populations. Family physicians are often the unsung heroes who provide front-line care to individual patients, their family, and the community and this has been profoundly exemplified this year.

I am delighted to share our 2019 Annual Report highlighting the department’s significant accomplishments, sustained excellence, and renewed effort in the pursuit of our tripartite mission of clinical care, teaching and research.
We are a Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), recognized by NCQA since 2015. Our team is dedicated to providing comprehensive, integrated, and coordinated care to patients from all walks of life.
