Prospective GPH Students

FAQs for Applying to the GPH Track

Is there a minimum GPA for acceptance into the program?

Although there is no minimum for your application to be considered, GPA is an important factor. Most students accepted into the Global Public Health track have GPAs that fall in the range of 3.5 – 4.0.  We are looking for students who are committed to learning, which is at least partially reflected in your GPA.

What can I do to strengthen my application?

Your application should demonstrate a strong interest in Global Public Health through the courses you’ve taken and your extracurricular activities.  In your answers to the question prompts, your personal statement should reflect this interest clearly and specifically.

Are there any prerequisites?

No. However, you might want to take an introductory course that provides a broad overview of global issues and themes, many of which can be found in the course catalog.  In addition, we encourage you to complete as many of your College requirements as possible.

What type of student are you looking for?

The track is interdisciplinary and individualized, which allows students much flexibility.  We are therefore looking for students who are passionate about Global Public Health, who demonstrate initiative in pursuing their academic interests, and who will contribute to our community of learners.

What do I need to submit in my application, and when is the deadline for applying?

All of this information is on our website: https://globalstudies.as.virginia.edu/global-public-health

If I become a GPH major, can I double major?

Many GPH students major or minor in another subject.  Please refer to the College of Arts & Sciences policies for more information.

If I become a GPH major, will I be able to participate in a study abroad program?

We encourage each student to have a meaningful global experience.  Thus, many of our students participate in 2-week, summer, or semester-long study abroad programs.

Can I talk to someone about my application?

The Global Public Health Ambassadors are 4th year majors who take a leadership role in raising awareness about the field of public health, leading in-person and virtual events, advocating for the field of public health, and contributing to projects and presentations that garner interest in public health education and careers among other students at UVA. One of the Ambassadors’ primary roles is to help answer questions from prospective students about the program and about the field of public health.

If you are a prospective student who wants to talk with a program Ambassador, please contact Tracey Brookman at tlc5q@virginia.edu.
