Many new patients coming to the Division of Otology in the UVA Department of Otolaryngology, especially those presenting with complaints of hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), dizziness or balance problems, and chronic ear infections  can expect to be scheduled for a hearing test in Audiology prior to their appointment with Dr. Hashisaki or Dr. Kesser.  Audiology is located on the first floor of the 415 Ray C. Hunt Building, mjust below the Otolaryngology Clinic.

Following the hearing test, patients will come up to the second floor where they will be seen by Dr. Hashisaki or Kesser.  The encounter involves providing us with a directed, detailed history of the complaint including associated symptoms, exacerbating and relieving factors where appropriate, and impact on your quality of life.  The doctors will then examine you, review the hearing test or any imaging study (CT scan or MRI) and discuss treatment options.

We feel it is important for patients to understand the nature of the problem, the diagnosis, and all treatment options.  These will be explained in detail, and all questions will be answered.  Instructions and follow-up will also be discussed.
