PHS — Financial Assistance
Graduate aid comes in many forms, including fellowships, scholarships, assistantships, wages, and loans. The Public Health Sciences Program offers two direct departmental scholarships, the Douglas P. Wagner Scholarship and the William Hobson Scholarship. GTA and GRA positions are not available to graduate level students in the MPH program.
PHS DEPARTMENTAL SCHOLARSHIPS/FELLOWSHIPS
Scholarships are provided through the generosity of alumni and friends of the Public Health Programs. Scholarships awarded to full-time (at least 12cr a semester) entering students are automatically renewed for the second year provided the recipients remain a full-time student (at least 12cr a semester), in good academic standing and continue to maintain a standard of professional behavior characteristic of our profession.
Scholarships are based on merit – defined broadly to include academic achievement as well as a range of other personal accomplishments and experiences – we also consider an applicant’s financial need based on the FAFSA submitted to the University Student Financial Services Office.
No additional essay or application is required to be considered for scholarships from the Public Health Sciences program. The Admission Committee takes all applicants into consideration for scholarships that have submitted an application on SOPHAS by a priority deadline of January 15, 2025. Applications for admission must be submitted, verified, and completed by this deadline to be reviewed for scholarship consideration. Scholarships range from $5,000 per year up to full in-state tuition awards. Applicants who would like the Committee to consider their financial need must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the priority deadline of January 15, 2025.
Doug Wagner came to the University of Virginia from George Washington University in 1995 to serve as a professor in the newly established Department of Public Health Sciences, initially named the Department of Health Evaluation Sciences. Trained at Vanderbilt as an Econometrician, he provided statistical guidance to faculty and students from across the UVa Grounds. A kind and generous man, Doug treated all requests for guidance equally, whether they came from a fellow faculty member or from an undergraduate. He understood statistics to be an integral part of a full life and enjoyed sharing his perspective. He avoided the use of jargon and provided insightful and useful advice. Doug’s suggestions always made practical sense, revealing underlying numerical truths. They became the foundation of innumerable academic articles and enabled many careers. This scholarship honors Doug’s legacy by providing ongoing support to students.
William (Bill) Hobson was married for many years to Dr. Evelyn Troup, an outstanding educator and psychologist who spent her professional life evaluating students and arranging appropriate school placements for those with special needs. From the time of his college graduation, Bill was a real estate developer both in California and on the east coast. In spite of serious health problems throughout his life and a devastating stroke in 1985, Bill continued to work into his later years. Sharing Evelyn’s interest in education, Bill’s goal was to fund scholarships for college students. He succeeded in establishing Trusts at 40 institutions of higher learning. Countless students owe their college education to his generosity.
