Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship
Overview
The University of Virginia offers a two-year ACGME accredited fellowship program in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry to provide qualified physicians with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to prevent, evaluate and treat pediatric patients with mental illness. The program is designed to endow the fellow with a well-rounded clinical and academic experience to be a confident and independent child psychiatrist with leadership capacity to advance evidence-based clinical care and understanding of pediatric mental health care. The program provides a 24-month intensive academic and training experience for applicants who have completed at least 36 months of general psychiatry training.
The fellow’s clinical work is grounded in experiences at the University of Virginia Medical Center and a number of outside sites. These experiences are designed to provide the trainee with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to evaluate and treat a broad range of behavioral and emotional challenges. In alignment with the Department of Psychiatry & Neurobehavioral Sciences’ mission, the fellowship program strives to provide excellent clinical services through inpatient and outpatient facilities. To expand child psychiatry services to more rural, underserved communities in Virginia, the fellow will also have the opportunity to provide care using telemedicine to treat a variety of children through outpatient “visits”.
Our faculty has a variety of clinical and academic interests, giving our trainees a broad range of education and experience. To further the mission of the University of Virginia Health System, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellows are encouraged to cultivate and sustain an environment of excellence, innovation and optimal quality in the care of their patients.
Our goal is the creation and sharing of health knowledge within a culture that promotes equity, diversity, and inclusiveness. Graduate Medical Education at UVA Health will provide a just and supportive learning environment. A comprehensive education in medical knowledge, healthcare disparities, interprofessional teamwork, and patient safety will allow the development of outstanding and compassionate healthcare providers who advance medical science.
