Justin Smith, MD - Program Director
Dr. Justin Smith is board certified in both Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry by the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He attended The University of Virginia for medical school and then completed his C-L fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has been at UVA for nine years as a faculty member for the general adult psychiatry program and was the C-L Service Director for six years. He has an interest in neuropsychiatry and has been part of the UVA Huntington’s clinic with neurology colleagues and teaches the neuroscience curriculum for the adult psychiatry residents. Dr. Smith’s outside interests include watching basketball, playing music with friends, hanging out with his family, and various sorts of tinkering.
Elisabeth Dietrich, MD - Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service Director

Dr. Elisabeth Dietrich is the associate director of the consultation-liaison psychiatry service. She completed medical school and psychiatry residency at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine before completing C-L fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Her interests include critical care psychiatry, transplant psychiatry, quality improvement, and healthcare administration. During training, she assisted with investigating the use of proactive psychiatric consultation in the medical intensive care setting. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, running, and being outdoors.
Hema Kher, MD MPH - Consultation-Liaison Core Faculty
Dr. Hema Kher is associate program director for the adult general psychiatry residency and Rotation Director for Education. She completed psychiatry residency and C-L fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. During fellowship, she completed a psychosocial oncology track at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She joined UVA as an inpatient C-L attending and has a psychiatry clinic at UVA’s Emily Couric Cancer Center. She enjoys spending time with her husband and son, exploring restaurants and bakeries in the Charlottesville area, and spending time outdoors.
Anne Louise Stewart, MD - Consultation-Liaison Core Faculty
Dr. Anne Louise Stewart is program director for the adult general psychiatry program. She joined the UVA team as one of the consultation- liaison psychiatry faculty after completing a C-L fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern. She is passionate about scholarly education and developing new curriculums. She enjoys caring for patients alongside residents and fellows as well as being part of the reproductive psychiatry research program. Outside of time with her family, she loves rose gardening and sharing the roses with friends.
Jordan Rosen, MD - Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, Core Faculty
Dr. Jordan Rosen is board certified in both Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry by the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He attended St. George’s University and completed his residency at the University of Virginia before attending Yale University for his C-L fellowship. He is a leading clinician in critical care psychiatry with publications spanning topics of QTc prolongation, delirium, and drug toxidromes and was the director of critical care psychiatry at Brigham and Women’s hospital and Harvard Medical School prior to joining the University of Virginia. He brings this teaching expertise to the general psychiatry residency as well as the pulmonology critical care fellows. As the Program Director of the general residency psychiatry program and the Director of the Consultation-Liaison psychiatry service, he is widely involved in the department. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, golden retriever, and cat.
Jennifer L. Payne, MD
Dr. Jennifer L. Payne is the Vice Chair of Research and a Professor at UVA in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, as well as the Director of the Reproductive Psychiatry Research Program (RPRP). She is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry and is an expert in reproductive psychiatry.
Dr. Payne has been conducting clinical research for the past 20 years, with a particular emphasis in perinatal psychiatry. Her research interests include epigenetic biomarkers of postpartum depression (for which she holds 2 patents), the genetic, biological basis, prevention and treatment of postpartum depression, as well as premenstrual and perimenopausal mood disorders and psychiatric management. Her work also includes defining best practices for management of psychiatric disorders in pregnancy and postpartum.
Nassima Ait-Daoud Tirouririne, MD
Dr. Nassima Ait-Daoud Tiouririne is Interim Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She is a Board-certified psychiatrist, Addiction Medicine specialist, and director of the Center for Leading Edge Addiction Research (CLEAR). She is dedicated to teaching, clinical care and research and is responsible for the education and teaching of Addiction Medicine fellows and training of C-L fellows in addiction medicine topics. In her time off, Dr. Ait-Daoud enjoys hiking, gardening, and yoga.
