Erika Maynard, MD - Program Director
Dr. Erika Maynard is a board-certified Child & Adolescent psychiatrist and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. Dr. Maynard graduated from Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine where she also completed her residency and child & adolescent fellowship. Dr. Maynard joined the UVA faculty in 2022 and served as Associate Program Director of the Child & Adolescent Fellowship from 2023-2024, when she took over as Program Director.

Dr. Lady Martinez Fernandez graduated medical school from Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), Dominican Republic before completing her residency at the University of Virginia. She also completed two fellowships in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut and Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is board-certified in General, Child & Adolescent, and Geriatric Psychiatry. Dr. Martinez Fernandez is an Assistant Professor for the UVA Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and VP of Integrated Patient Care. Her areas of interest include Neurodevelopmental Disorders, College Mental Health, Integrated Care in Pediatric Mental Health, School Consultation, and Telepsychiatry.
Dr. Preska Melissa Moore completed her residency in general psychiatry at the University of Virginia and went on to complete additional training in the child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at UVA where she was Chief Fellow. During residency, she received several honors including the Peer Commendation Award, the Humanitarian Award, and the Scholar Award, based in part on her published research on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). During her fellowship, she received additional specialized training in psychodynamic play therapy and traveled to the Tavestock Clinic in London, England to further her training. She is board certified in child and adolescent psychiatry and has worked at UVA and in various community mental health settings.
Dr. Evan Cordrey is a graduate of Creighton University School of Medicine and completed both his general residency and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry training at the University of Virginia where he was Chief Fellow. He now works as a teacher and mentor of Psychiatry residents with the goal of improving resident’s integration of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry to existing General Psychiatry knowledge. He also serves roles in Outpatient Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatry Med-Management Supervision and Pediatric Psychiatry Hospital Consultation-Liaison support. His interests include ADHD across the lifespan, college-age life transitions, and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.
Dr. David Byrnes is a board-certified child and family psychiatrist dedicated to supporting the well-being of children, adolescents, and families. After earning his undergraduate degree from Duke University, he pursued his medical education at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Byrnes completed his psychiatry fellowship at the University of Virginia, gaining extensive clinical experience in treating a wide range of mental health conditions. Currently, Dr. Byrnes runs a private practice in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he offers personalized psychiatric care with a focus on collaborative, family-centered approaches. In addition to his clinical practice, he provides consulting services for The Keswick School, a therapeutic boarding school known for its work with children facing complex emotional and behavioral challenges.
Dr. Mike Heck is the founder of Treehouse Child Psychiatry in Charlottesville, VA and a graduate of the University of Virginia’s residency program and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship. He received his B.S. from VCU before attending medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida. He then returned to UVA for his General Psychiatry Residency and CAP Fellowship. Dr. Heck treats a wide variety of mental health problems in children, adolescents, and young adults, including ADHD, Impulsive Behavior, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Disruptive Mood Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Autism, OCD and many other conditions including depression and anxiety disorders. Dr. Heck has a passion for reducing mental health stigma and educating other about mental health.
Jaclyn Shepard, PsyD is a child therapy instructor and Associate Professor for UVA’s Clinical Psychology division. She was a Fellow at the University of Virginia after completing residency at the University of Miami School of Medicine. She specializes in pediatric behavioral medicine and adjustment to chronic medical conditions, grief and loss. Her research interests include psychobehavioral factors and the use of technology in the management of pediatric chronic illness.
Dr. Bao Vo received his medical degree from Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine before completing residency and CAP fellowship at the University of Virginia. He supervises UVA trainees while also working in a private practice where he specializes in children, adolescents, and young adults experiencing anger management, antisocial personality, school or behavioral issues, chronic impulsivity, and gaming addiction. He employs a variety of treatment modalities including CBT, DBT, psychodynamic and psychopharmacological treatments.
