How to Apply
A message from the program director:
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the University of Virginia Psychiatry Residency Program! Choosing a residency is a big step, and we’re excited to share what makes UVA such a special place to train. Our new four-year integrated curriculum is designed to support your growth as both a clinician and a person, with experiences that build on each other and open doors to whatever path in psychiatry you choose.
One of the highlights of training here is our innovative approach to psychotherapy education. You’ll receive hands-on teaching and supervision in motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, with opportunities to practice and refine your skills throughout residency. Our faculty are deeply invested in teaching, and we love seeing residents grow in confidence as they discover their own style as therapists.
UVA is also expanding rapidly – bringing in new clinical services and faculty with wide-ranging expertise. This means more opportunities for you to work alongside leaders in the field, to explore areas of interest, and to be part of a department that’s building for the future. We pride ourselves on being a supportive, collaborative community where residents challenge themselves, celebrate each other’s successes, and find joy in the work we do.
We can’t wait to learn more about you and hope you’ll consider joining us here in Charlottesville!
