Academic Innovation & Scholarship
Hospitalists at UVA have broad exposure to learners across the spectrum of medical education, both in the clinical environment and in the classroom. Hospitalists serve as attendings on more than half of the inpatient teaching lanes. In this capacity, they lead clinical care teams composed of senior residents, interns, and fourth and third year medical students. Hospitalists also host learners on the orthopedic comanagement service, implementing a curriculum on perioperative medicine and inpatient consultation. Finally, hospitalists work one-on-one with outstanding fourth-year medical students on their Advanced Clinical Electives (ACE) in preparation for internship.
UVA Hospitalists hold a variety of educational leadership roles. These include:
- Associate Program Directors for the Internal Medicine Residency Program: leading curriculum design, evaluation, recruitment efforts, and quality improvement and patient safety education
- Thread leaders for the School of Medicine: overseeing longitudinal curriculum in quality improvement and patient safety
- Associate Clerkship Directors for Internal Medicine: designing novel curriculum and overseeing assessment for third-year medical students
- Directing the Acute Care/Internal Medicine portion of the Intern Readiness Course: a two-week course in Spring of the fourth year of medical school, designed to prepare students to feel ready to care for patients in the acute care setting
- Directing Clinical Development for the School of Medicine: including overseeing the Foundations of Clinical Medicine coaching program
- Master Assessors: a role in which faculty assess students on Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and make summative entrustment decisions
- Directing the School of Medicine Intersessions Course: where students enhance clinical learning through activities designed to revisit basic science, incorporate curricular threads, and practice clinical skills
- Leading Clinical Reasoning and Organizational Coaching efforts for struggling medical learners
- Directing the Bedside to Community Course: focused on integration of health policy and clinical performance development
Hospitalists have a significant role in the School of Medicine’s largest course, Foundations of Clinical Medicine (FCM). Launched in 2018, FCM is a longitudinal course led by physician coaches engaging patients, standardized patients, and simulation to introduce and foster clinical skills through small group, case-based exercises. At least ten hospitalists have prominent roles in FCM either as coaches or coach associates.
