Hi there, I’m Ryan! I grew up in NJ and FL and most recently call Jacksonville, FL home. I attended the University of Florida for undergrad where I studied biochemistry. I then worked there for two years as a lab technician studying translational approaches for neurodegenerative disorders, such as ALS. I moved to Virginia for medical school and attended UVA as part as the MSTP (MD/PhD) program. During my PhD I studied the cell biology of endosome trafficking, protein degradation, and organelle homeostasis when lysosomes are stressed by pharmacologic or biologic agents. These years were especially formative in cultivating my appreciation for the molecular and mechanistic underpinnings of cellular biology and how this impacts disease, which greatly heightened my interest in pathology. Many hours at the microscope did not hurt either!
I am thrilled to be continuing my career and journey at UVA for residency. The community and supportive nature of the program and department make it a wonderful place to train. The people are both incredibly kind and intelligent, which makes it a stimulating yet collegial environment, and you can easily appreciate the passion our faculty have for teaching. Whether you are interested in academia, research, private practice, education, or any other path, there is a place for you here! Plus, having lived in Charlottesville for 8+ years now, I am glad to continue to call it home, as it is full of natural beauty, delicious food, and plenty to do, making it a wonderful place to live.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my wife Caroline and our two cats, Willow and Vivienne, reading thrillers/fantasy/horror, attending concerts, golfing, hiking, making trivia quizzes for my friends, cheering on the Gators and the Hoos, and gluten free baking.
