Prior to joining the University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology Michael Mazzeffi was Executive Vice Chair and Director of Cardiac Critical Care at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He was also on the faculty at University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD where he was a Division Chief for Critical Care Medicine, a Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship Director, Medical Director of the hospital’s Rapid Response Team, and Co-chair of the hospital’s Resuscitation Committee and Patient Blood Management Committee. He completed a Master of Clinical Research degree and maintains an active research program in perioperative outcomes research and blood coagulation.

His work has been funded by the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation. He is active in the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and is currently the Chair of its ECMO Committee. He was actively involved in faculty development and affairs at George Washington University and University of Maryland where he created a scholarly development program, participated in faculty development seminars, and was a mentor for numerous medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. He is married to Darcie Everett, who is a physician and vaccine expert at the Food and Drug Administration, and is a father of Siena and Galen who love swimming, ice skating, and Legos. Dr. Mazzeffi will be starting on August 1st, 2022.
