The Department has worked in various locations in Tanzania in collaboration with the Department of Neurological Surgery and sponsored the Madaktari Africa.

Several multi-disciplinary teaching trips (involving neurosurgery and anesthesiology residents, critical care nurses, and Dr. Durieux as supervising faculty member) were undertaken to Haydom Lutheran Hospital and to Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza. The purpose of these efforts was to teach skills required for safe neurosurgical care to surgeons, anesthesia provides and critical care personnel. In both locations no neurosurgical expertise existed, and general or orthopedic surgeons, as well as clinical officers, were trained in basic, life-saving neurosurgery procedures.
