Neuroanesthesia

The neuroanesthesia rotation offers a great variety of cases and exposure to complex neurosurgical procedures. These procedures include craniotomy for tumor resection and arteriovenous malformations, endovascular and open treatment of aneurysms, transsphenoidal pituitary surgery, and advanced functional surgeries such as deep brain stimulator placement, focused ultrasound, and epilepsy surgery. Additionally our renowned spine surgeons perform significant (10+ level) spinal fusions requiring advanced monitoring, and often significant resuscitation.

The neuro rotation will expose you to many advanced techniques including asleep and awake fiberoptic intubation, alternative airway techniques, anesthesia to facilitate neuromonitoring, thromboelastography, and ICP monitoring. Highlights of the program include:

  • 2 operating rooms with capability for intraoperative MRI
  • Comprehensive stroke center with large referral area for interventional thrombectomy procedures
  • UVA Neurosurgery and Neurology consistently is ranked in the top 50 in the nation resulting in significant referral of complex cases
  • UVA Neuroanesthesia faculty are nationally recognized for their excellence in research and education
