The Department of Anesthesiology has educational opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as continuing education events for professional anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists. Education in all facets is a cornerstone of our Department and we have earned a strong national reputation of educational excellence across the country. We continue to enhance our programs annually and pride ourselves on being at the forefront of educational innovation in our field.

Each year, we interview approximately 200 applicants to admit a Categorical class of twelve into our four year program with an integrated intern year spread across the PGY1 and PGY2 years.

The Department has ACGME accredited fellowships in Pain Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Regional and Acute Pain Medicine.  We have many Clinical Instructorships offering advanced training in Quality and Patient Safety, Ambulatory Regional Anesthesia, Medical Simulation, Education Research, Obstetric Anesthesia, and Neuroanesthesia.

UVA Anesthesiology offers many avenues for medical students of all levels to get exposure to anesthesiology as a specialty.  MS1 and MS2 are encouraged to get involved with the Anesthesia Interest Group, while MS3s have a required anesthesia clerkship as part of SAGO.  MS4s have many opportunities to do anesthesia as electives.

Continuing education opportunities in Anesthesiology are available for the Medical Simulation Center, observational preceptorships, and Anesthesiology Grand Rounds.

The Department of Anesthesiology at UVA consists of 10 divisions that each honor a commitment to medical education and a dedication to Anesthetic research. Our goal for you during your Shadowing and Observation day, is to offer opportunities for an educational experience, as well as being able to witness our UVA staff at work in the OR.
