University of Virginia’s Administration Fellowship is SAEM-accredited and specifically designed to train emergency medicine residency graduates as healthcare leaders by developing expertise in administration, clinical operations, quality care, process improvement, information technology, financial management, program development, and effective leadership.
Curriculum, Scholarship, & Research
Clinical: 16 hours per week [approximately 8 shifts per month; 1,536 clinical hours over the two-year fellowship] working in the Emergency Department at University of Virginia Medical Center. Because the fellowship expectations are rigorous, including successful achievement of board certification, successful achievement of an MBA and robust engagement in operational programs, external moonlighting will not be allowed unless approved by the Department of Emergency Medicine Chair and Fellowship Director.
- Refine clinical skills within the robust academic clinical emergency medicine setting.
- Obtain board certification in Emergency Medicine, if not already attained.
- Develop clinical skills necessary to achieve outstanding performance on individual and departmental metrics related to patient experience, quality of care, and clinical operations.
- Participate in clinical teaching of medical students and residents from the University of Virginia Residency in Emergency Medicine.
Graduate Degree: Per SAEM accreditation requirements, an approved program must demonstrate a requirement for pursuit of master’s level training such as an MBA, MHA, or similar leadership/administrative program.
Administrative: In addition to mandatory participation in meetings and hospital committees, the fellow is expected to complete a certification program of the fellow’s choice (ex. ACEP ED Directors Academy, Lean/Six Sigma, Epic Physician Builder, etc) and be a contributing member to a national committee of interest.
Scholarship & Research: The fellow is also expected to submit at least one scholarly product and one abstract for publication, participate and complete projects under faculty mentorship, participate in research meetings, and attend the ACEP Reimbursement and Coding Conference.
