Upper level residents have 1-month blocks dedicated for electives. Available offerings include, but are not limited to:

Pediatrics
Medical Toxicology
Ophthalmology Clinic
Emergency Radiology
Administrative
Medical education
Billing, coding, and legal
Research
Community EM
Charlottesville Free Clinic
Event Medicine (including NASCAR in Michigan)

An international rotations is available through our UVA-Guatemala Initiative

Residents may also take part in other international electives offered through other departments at UVA, or other institutions, with approval from the GME committee.

Electives are flexible in that residents with a particular interest in an EM subspecialty are encouraged to design a unique experience suited to their interests. This is subject to the residency program director’s prior approval of the elective.
