Curriculum

About

The Emergency Medicine Residency curriculum emphasizes broad-based training during the first year that progresses into specialized concentration in emergency medicine and critical care. All residents will become certified in ACLS, ATLS, and PALS during their residency orientation period. Each year is broken down into 13 four-week blocks.

All EM blocks include adult and pediatric shifts, and there is a dedicated pediatric EM block in the 3rd year.

PGY-1

EM – 6 blocks
Trauma ICU – 1 block
MICU – 1 block
Anesthesiology – 1 block
Medicine – 3 weeks
Ultrasound/EM – 1 block
EMS/EM – 1 block
Toxicology – 3 weeks

PGY-2

EM – 8 blocks
SICU – 1 block
Culpeper Hospital Community/Rural EM – 1 block
OB/Research – 1 block
Elective – 2 block

PGY-3

EM – 8 blocks
Pediatric EM INOVA – 1 block
Trauma ICU – 1 block
PICU – 1 block
Elective – 1 block                                            Orthopedics/EM – 1 block

Other Curriculum Features

All residents are guaranteed to attend one national conference once during residency, fully funded by the department. In addition, residents will partake in a class retreat each year during residency.
