Special Tracks

AP-Only Residents: The PGY1 year of AP-only training directly mirrors that of AP/CP residents.  As PGY2s, they follow the training path of an AP/CP PGY3, while their third and final year resembles the fourth year of an AP/CP resident; however—with the exception of Molecular pathology and Hematopathology—any Laboratory Medicine rotations are replaced with AP or elective topics, including opportunities for research electives. These trainees also join the Clinical Informatics sessions in the spring of their third year to ensure exposure to this increasingly important field.

AP/NP Residents: The first two years of AP/NP training follow the PGY1 and PGY3 AP/CP curricula, with additional emphasis of molecular pathology and hematopathology.  In their third and fourth years, AP/NP residents focus on their Neuropathology training with graduated responsibility including taking after-hours call for Neuropathology frozen sections with direct and—subsequently—indirect supervision.  These trainees also join the Clinical Informatics sessions in the spring of their third year. They spend one month of their second fellowship year in an away elective at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) focusing on Pediatric Neuropathology (both surgical and autopsy) under direct supervision of Dr. Mariarita Santi, MD, PhD. An additional month away elective is spent at the University of Kentucky Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center/Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, focusing on diagnostic pathology of neurodegenerative disorders. The second half of their training also allows ample time for research projects in Neuropathology, with many collaborative opportunities with both basic scientists and clinician investigators within and beyond the department.

CP-Only Residents: CP-only residents parallel the schedule of PGY2 AP/CP residents for their first year of training.  They will continue to master these services in their second and third year of training, with clinical efforts complemented by research, educational, and QA/QI endeavors based on the trainee’s individual goals.

Physician Scientist Residency Pathway:  Our Physician Scientist Residency pathway is designed for competitive residency candidates who endeavor to pursue a career as a physician investigator. Trainees may apply to this pathway on any of the existing tracks (AP/CP, AP-only, CP-only, AP/NP).  In addition to up to six months of research time embedded within the residency years, we will provide full funding for an additional year of research; salary support for this year will be provided based on the PGY-level resident pay scale to ensure that our PSRP trainees do not incur a financial penalty for pursuing research training. For promising and productive trainees who have been unsuccessful in obtaining extramural funding, a second year of research support will be considered.
