Andrew Young, MD
Surgery Resident
Medical School: University of Virginia
While many might assume UVA was a natural choice for me, it has been the ideal place for my residency journey. Born and raised in Charlottesville, I attended UVA for both undergraduate and medical studies. My interest in medicine ignited during my time as an EMT and later as a Paramedic. I served the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad in roles such as the Training Officer and continued this commitment through medical school until the start of my residency. The outstanding residents and faculty first attracted me to the program. The depth of the rotations, mentorship, leadership roles, research avenues, educational framework, and camaraderie with fellow programs further solidified my choice.
In addition to my medical pursuits, I’ve obtained my pilot’s license, completed two marathons, and engaged in cardiothoracic surgery outcomes research. I’ve also contributed to lung transplant ischemia reperfusion basic science research during my dedicated professional development time. As I look to the future, I am preparing to pursue specialized training in cardiothoracic surgery.
