Christopher (Dash) Duncan, MD
2025-26 Fellow, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Hello!
My journey into sports medicine originally started in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where I was born and raised. I became involved in a multitude of sports from an early age, including football, baseball, and basketball, but by high school developed a more dedicated focus on football. After high school, I attended Nicholls State University, where I majored in biology and played quarterback on the football team. After graduation, I worked briefly as a Case Tech at Baton Rouge General Hospital before attending Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, where I completed the combined MD/MBA program. I was then fortunate enough to match into the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program here at UVA in Charlottesville, where I have been living, working, learning, and enjoying the beauty of the Blue Ridge for the past four years.
As with many others who have chosen to pursue sports medicine, my time spent as both an athlete and a patient has strongly shaped my academic interests and career goals. I chose to pursue a career in medicine specifically to become a sports medicine physician, and I am excited about the opportunity to help improve the lives and function of patients of all ages, abilities, and athletic goals.
I chose the UVA Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship for several reasons. First and foremost, I am hoping to establish a strong foundation in all aspects of sports medicine. In addition to strong training in the clinical management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injury, including diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound, UVA offers the extensive experience in things like athletic training room coverage, pre-participation physicals, management of concussion and post-concussion return-to-play, running medicine, and relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs) that I knew would make me a well-rounded team physician by the time I was done. UVA’s program also offers a plethora of sideline and event coverage experience, including high school football, high school cross country, community running events, and the numerous NCAA Division-1 sports here at UVA. Beyond the clinical and extra-curricular experiences, I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to continue training under the tremendous faculty here at UVA, all of whom I’ve come to know over the past four years.
Outside of medicine, I enjoy remaining active as much as possible, including hobbies such as running, exercising, hiking, or golfing (which often ends up very similar to hiking the way I play). I also enjoy playing guitar and singing, and my friend Greg and I will often be found playing at the open mic night down at Rapunzel’s the second Friday of each month. Otherwise, I enjoy spending quality time with friends and loved ones, including my wife Sophia, with whom I will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary in September 2025.
Go Hoos!
