Signing up for Fourth-Year Electives

Creating a schedule that will ensure you are competitive for the Match and prepared educationally to succeed in residency is an important first step! All requests for 4th-year electives must be emailed to Ms. Grace Bernier, Student Programs Coordinator, and Dr. Sean Reed, Pre-Doctoral Director, Department of Family Medicine. Students may not sign up directly through OASIS.

Students Going Into Family Medicine

STUDENTS GOING INTO FAMILY MEDICINE MUST SUBMIT THEIR ELECTIVE REQUESTS WITHIN 5 DAYS OF THE OPENING OF THE 4th YEAR ELECTIVE SCHEDULE

Students who plan to pursue a residency in family medicine MUST contact one of our Residency Advisors prior to the official opening of 4th-year electives (make this a hotlink). Alerting us to your interest will allow us to prepare to meet your needs during the electives registration process.

There will be a 5 day “grace period” immediately following the opening of the 4th year electives for students going into family medicine. It is NOT a first come first served scenario during this Grace Period. At the end of the “grace period” all requests for electives from students entering family medicine will be reviewed. We will make every attempt to provide everyone with their first choice with regard to the specific elective and the block requested.

Students will be notified of their options in the week following the “grace period.” Failing to submit a request during the “grace period” will dramatically reduce your options with regard to what electives are available as well as what block. Requests for electives from students not pursuing a family medicine residency will be considered after the “grace period.”

Students Entering Other Specialties

Requests to complete an elective in the Department of Family Medicine are welcome from students pursuing all medical specialties. Given the limited number of total elective spots available and the unique requirements of students seeking a family residency program, we must initially, however, prioritize the needs of these students when assigning elective spots. There are always additional spots available after this initial wave of assignments.

If you are interested in registering for an elective please email our Student Programs Coordinator, Ms. Grace Bernier at the opening of the electives schedule. We will hold these requests until the end of a 5 day “grace period” (see above). We will then begin the process of confirming (by email) electives with all students. This process will remain open for the remainder of the year or until all spots are full.
