Research and Teaching During Fellowship
The fellow will be required to publish a minimum of one article or book chapter on a sports medicine topic during the year. Additionally, (s)he will be expected to design and/or participate in a clinical research project. Both the writing and the research project will take place under the mentoring of a senior faculty member who will assist with the process.
The fellow will furthermore develop skills in teaching by preparing and delivering lectures to medical students, resident physicians and faculty on a monthly basis including:
- MSK exam for medical students
- Splinting/casting lectures, knee exam lectures, hip/back exam lectures, etc.. to Family Medicine and PM&R residents
- Grand rounds presentations to both Family Medicine and PM&R
- Various topics for athletic training students
Faculty will provide feedback to assist with ways to improve and will offer additional guidance and development to hone teaching skills if desired.
As conference attendance is strongly supported, the fellow is encouraged to present lectures, case posters, and research projects at local (Virginia Academy of Family Physician’s) and/or national level conferences (American Medical Society of Sports Medicine or American College of Sports Medicine) – an invaluable experience!
