Diversity Equity & Inclusion

We are committed to including students with diverse backgrounds in conjunction with the ASTRO initiative of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in Radiation Oncology.

URiM Leadership Program

New this year, the UVA GME Community is sponsoring a leadership opportunity for visiting and UVA 4th year medical students accepted into elective rotations at UVA (July-October). Their goal is to specifically increase the recruitment of URiM students and others with a strong interest in diversity to GME training programs.

During the Leadership Program, Friday afternoons during the rotation will be dedicated to seminars, workshops and hands-on experiences with topics such as:

  • Leadership in Medicine
  • Addressing Health Disparities
  • Successful Residency Applications
  • Internship Survival

Participants will also benefit from networking with leaders and experts from both the Health System and other highly regarded Schools at UVA. Accepted visiting students may also apply for a $1,500 scholarship to help offset the cost of travel and housing. Students who complete all 4 Fridays of the program will be granted an interview should they apply to a UVA program.

If you are interested in applying for the Leadership Program & Travel Scholarship, please complete the application and email it to Rebekah McComb at rm5dg@virginia.edu.

The Program is open to 4th year med students who either are part of a group underrepresented in medicine or who have a strong interest in DEI work. Space in the Leadership Program is limited!

Trainee Diversity & Inclusion Conference

November 12th, 2022

The theme of the fifth annual trainee diversity and inclusion conference will be Excellence in Action: Lifting As We Climb. We are honored to have a national leader as our Keynote speaker to provide us insights on this topic and encourage us to change systems, and reflect on how we too can strive for equity. We are also fortunate to have panels of UVA faculty members and community members to share their insights on career development, harnessing your passions and balancing resident and faculty wellness.

This conference is free and designed for medical students, GME Trainees, GME faculty and staff. For more information and to register go to GME TDI Conference 2022.
