Logo for Student Medical Leadership ProgramThe Summer Medical Leadership Program (SMLP) is an innovative medical academic enrichment opportunity offered by the UVA School of Medicine. The number one goal of SMLP is to expose the participants to the “real world of medicine” to prepare them not only for admission to medical school but to assume future leadership positions in medicine/biomedical field. SMLP is a six-week intensive, residential summer program for pre-medical students who are interested in pursuing careers as medical doctors.

  • MCAT preparation
  • Professional Development (e.g. seminars, essay writing workshops)
  • Near-peer mentorship

A modest living stipend and food stipend are provided to all participants.

Summer Medical Leadership Program Team

The Summer Medical Leadership Program Team is led by Dr. Evelyn Aboagye, MD, MPH, and managed by Ashley Woodard, EdD and Dwan Love-Dinkens.

Dr. Aboagye is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and is in the Division of General Pediatrics. Dr. Aboagye’s interests include breastfeeding dyads, child health disparities and global health.

Ashley Woodard, EdD, is the UVA School of Medicine Director of Student Engagement and Strategic Partnerships.

Dwan Love-Dinkens is the UVA School of Medicine Assistant Director of Institutional Engagement & Community Partnerships.
