Telestroke
The UVA Telestroke Program consists of a robust network of hospitals across the Commonwealth of Virginia that partner with UVA to receive the best stroke care available. We are proud to be a Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest level of certification available from The Joint Commission and American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Just 3 percent of hospitals nationwide have earned this certification. We are the only academic medical center in Virginia certified as a Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center that provides Telestroke services to both internal and external customers.
The goal of a Telestroke encounter is to provide the stroke patient and referring physician with an expert-directed decision on acute treatment options and a short term management plan. We accomplish this by providing around the clock access to a UVA stroke neurologist, who conducts an examination via secure videoconferencing tools and performs an assessment of CT images. Each encounter is supported by a Telehealth Engineer, who ensures timely and secure transfers of diagnostic imaging, monitors the audio-video connection, and troubleshoots any technical issues during the encounter.
Stroke is one of a number of conditions where the application of telemedicine technology has been shown to be particularly effective. Telestroke assessments have been proven to be very reliable, with diagnosis accuracy and complication rates comparable to in-person assessments. Our program has achieved clinical equivalency in the use of anti-thrombolytics across our network when compared to traditional treatment models.
Our program is renowned for our desire to provide low-cost, high-quality solutions to areas of Virginia with little or no access to specialty resources.
