Scoliosis

Definition

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine is curved.

Causes

Scoliosis can be either congenital, neuromuscular, or idiopathic (unknown cause).

Symptoms

Symptoms of scoliosis include abnormal posture, abnormal gait, difficulty sitting, difficulty breathing, and slow physical responsiveness.

Surgery

If medical management, including occupational therapy and bracing, cannot correct or stop progression that will cause unacceptable symptoms, then surgery may be required.  Surgeries include anterior and posterior fusion with bone grafts and instrumentation.  There may be an option for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.  To learn more about what to expect if you are in the hospital for one of these surgeries, click here.
