Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which a vertebra(e) is displaced relative to other vertebrae in the spinal column.  It can cause sciatica, spinal stenosis, damage to the spinal cord, or pinch nerves.

Spondylolisthesis is most often caused by spondylolysis, a stress fracture of the bone, and is often hereditary(isthmic), or caused by overexertion over time(degenerative).

Symptoms of spondylolisthesis are related to abnormal compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots. Common symptoms include low back pain, muscle spasms, leg weakness, or limping.

Surgeries include decompression without fusion, anterior, anterior/posterior, posterior with and without instrumentation, and interbody fusion.  There may be an option for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.  To learn more about what to expect if you are in the hospital for one of these surgeries, click here.
