UVA Medical Center is a 600-bed teaching hospital and serves as the Regional Perinatal Center for northwest & central Virginia.

Operating as a “hospital without walls”, the UVA Children’s Hospital routinely cares for more than 3,000 admissions (excluding normal newborns) and 60,000 outpatient visits per year.

Opening in June 2014, the Battle Building is a comprehensive ambulatory facility that serves all the outpatient needs of children cared for at the University of Virginia, including the NICU High-Risk Follow-Up Clinic.

Located on the 7th Floor of the Medical Center, the Level IV NICU currently has 60 beds. Also available are two separate family suites that parents may care for their infant before discharge.

• 6 full-time, maternal-fetal medicine specialists and MFM fellowship
• 800-900 admissions per year with 30% of babies referred from surrounding rural community hospitals and other NICUs.
• ECMO (neonatal patients in NICU), Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery available 24/7.
• High-Frequency Oscillatory & Jet ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide, NAVA, and noninvasive ventilation.
• One of the first hospitals in the state to offer Therapeutic Hypothermia therapy to neonates.
• Neuro-NICU multidisciplinary team available (first in Virginia) for all patients with brain injury.
• Full range of pediatric subspecialty resources, with the University of Virginia being the only tertiary perinatal care center for all of western Virginia.
• Point-of-care ultrasound is available for use in central line placement.
• Sophisticated transport system serving central and northwest Virginia via a specially designed and equipped ambulance and southwest Virginia via a comparable air transport system.
• Strong Advanced Practice Provider (NNP/PA) program.
• Fully integrated electronic medical record (Epic) for both inpatient & outpatient.
• Emerging use of telemedicine technology with referring physicians & hospitals.
• Well-organized and skilled nursing staff utilizing primary nursing to facilitate coordination of patient care.
• Neonatology Follow-up Clinic with active participation by pediatric physical & occupational therapists, developmentalists, and social workers.
• Computer data collection and retrieval systems for information regarding neonatal transport, in-patient therapy, serial developmental assessments, and research studies.
• Clinical research facilities are located within the NICU and laboratory research facilities close to the NICU.
• Part of the Vermont Oxford Network with an active quality improvement program.
• Founding member of the Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative.
