Overview
Become a future leader in academic emergency medicine.
This innovative fellowship offers hands-on training in clinical education, program leadership, and academic administration. Fellows work directly with UVA’s Emergency Medicine Residency leadership team, building the skills needed to thrive as an Assistant or Associate Program Director.
Program Highlights:
• 1–2 year fellowship with option to pursue an advanced degree (MBA, MHA, or MSEd)
• Serve as Interim Assistant Program Director or Advanced Clinical Elective Director
• 16 clinical hours/week as an attending physician
• Full immersion in program operations, education, and administration
• Personalized mentorship from experienced program leaders
What You’ll Learn:
• Residency program design, finances & accreditation
• Curriculum development & assessment
• Educational theory and simulation-based teaching
• Team building, leadership, and change management
• Resident recruitment, advising, and performance evaluation
• Real-world program leadership through committee and project involvement
Fellow Responsibilities
- Lead at least one new residency initiative per year
- Deliver a minimum of 4 annual didactic sessions
- Mentor at least one resident’s scholarly project
- Participate in core committees: Clinical Competency, Program Evaluation, and Standardized Letter of Evaluation
- Lead the Residency Administration Track
- Develop recruitment materials & coordinate second-look events
- Represent UVA EM at national conferences
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: ~$85,000 (depending on clinical hours)
- Licensing Support
- CME Funding: $3,500/year (in addition to degree support)
- Advanced Degree: Funding available for MBA, MHA, or MSEd
- Moonlighting permitted (0–6 shifts/month)

A: This fellowship focuses on residency leadership. You’ll gain real-world experience running a program—not just teaching within one. You’ll function as an Assistant Program Director.
A: Yes. Most fellows moonlight 1–6 shifts per month.
A: Yes. You’ll supervise residents as an attending in our high-acuity ED with full support from the faculty team.
A: Recent fellow projects include:
- A procedural competency curriculum
- A statewide EBM initiative
- Resident supervisory models
- Asynchronous learning and oral boards prep
- Sign-out and handoff optimization
A: No, but scholarship is supported. Fellows have published book chapters, abstracts, and peer-reviewed papers.
A: Definitely. You’ll graduate with the experience, title, and skills to step directly into APD or education leadership roles.
