Our Fellows
Third Year Fellows
Charné Delport, DO, grew up just south of Roanoke, Virginia. She attended Virginia Tech for her BS in both Biological Sciences and Business Management. She did medical school in Blacksburg at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. For a change of pace, she did her Pediatric residency with an additional chief resident year at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Westchester, New York.
Charné chose UVA for several reasons, many of which were evident when she was still living in Virginia and continues to be true now. UVA has a close knit group feel of a smaller program while still having high acuity, being a large referral base, and serving a diverse population. Everyone encourages learning and growth in a supportive environment. The amazing relationships between the APPs, nursing staff, consulting services, and so many others all help make UVA a fantastic place to train.
UVA also had the added benefit of being closer to home, while getting to live in beautiful Charlottesville and enjoying all the advantages it provides, both in and out of the city.
Sherilyn Salefsky, MD, was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. She then moved back home to attend the MD/MPH program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Phoenix. She completed her Pediatric residency with an additional chief resident year at the University of Virginia.
Sherilyn chose to stay at UVA for her PICU fellowship for its high acuity yet small program atmosphere. The mixed cardiac and medical unit provides a unique opportunity for fellows to experience high patient volumes with both a large variety of medical pathology as well as complex cardiac physiology. The faculty, advanced practitioners, and staff are highly engaged with patient care and value providing holistic care while prioritizing fellow education and autonomy. She also loves that it is situated in the beautiful city of Charlottesville with Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains in her backyard.
Second Year Fellows
Kristy Wilkinson, MD, was born and raised in Albany, NY. She participated in a combined BA/MD degree program where she completed an undergraduate degree in Biology with minors in Spanish and Philosophy at Siena College in Loudonville, NY. She went on to medical school at Albany Medical College, and stayed on for pediatrics residency and an additional chief resident year at the Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center.
Kristy chose UVA for fellowship due to the combined PICU/CICU configuration, strong cardiac exposure, and plentiful “bread and butter” ICU patients from all over Virginia and beyond. Not so secretively, she has always wanted to move south, and Charlottesville was the perfect location! It has small town charm, but big city academics and connections. The same can be said for the fellowship program here at UVA. There is a close-knit, warm atmosphere, as well as a consistent drive to provide high quality, evidence based care.
First Year Fellows
Reyna Osorio, DO, was born and raised in Springfield, VA. She earned her undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology with minors in Spanish and Bible at Cedarville University in Ohio. She earned her medical degree at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine. At Wake Forest University, she completed her pediatric residency and chief residency year.
Reyna chose UVA for several reasons, many of which included the rave reviews from friends, family and colleagues around her about UVA’s love for teaching. As a fellow-centric fellowship program, it was evident from interviews that UVA’s goal is to provide world class teaching to its fellows. The cardiac exposure is strong as UVA is the heart center for her home state. Additionally, the mixed unit structure allows for plentiful learning opportunities and speaks highly of UVA’s collegiality! As a Level 1 trauma center, UVA will allow her to pursue her research interests in pediatric trauma care. Certainly not least, she looks forward to partnering with the center for global health equity to continue fostering her passion for pediatric global health care.
James Wiley, DO, grew up in Glastonbury, Connecticut. He attended Providence College where he double majored in Global Studies and Spanish. After college he worked in child obesity prevention and asthma hospitalization prevention research at the Children’s Center for Community Research at Connecticut Children’s, where his interest in pursuing a career in medicine was sparked. He completed a post-bacc at the University of Connecticut and ultimately attended medical school at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his pediatrics residency at the University of Connecticut, where he also completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship.
James chose UVA because of the excellent exposure to both PICU and CICU throughout fellowship, the strong concurrent cardiology and cardiac surgery program, as well as the superb faculty investment in fellow training. There is a fantastic balance of high acuity patients at a busy PICU while maintaining a close-knit team atmosphere. UVA offers a fantastic opportunity to become proficient at both medical PICU as well as pre/postoperative cardiac management which will further his goal of working as a cardiac intensivist after training.
