Our Fellows

Ruby R. Tan, MD, PGY-5

My name is Ruby. I joined UVA’s Developmental-Behavioral Pediatric Fellowship program in January 2023 after practicing general pediatrics in Maine, Richmond, VA, and recently at Kenner Army Health Clinic at Fort Gregg-Adams. I completed my residency at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas after finishing medical school at the University of the East and receiving a B.S. degree in Psychology at the University of the Philippines.

Going back to training felt right at this stage of my career after realizing the enormous need for more specialists to care for children with developmental and behavioral disabilities. At UVA Dev Peds, I receive clinical training from supportive attendings and acquire learning experiences from a diverse patient population of infants, children, and young adults. The program also provides mentored research opportunities for each trainee’s chosen area of interest. My current research project is focused on the diagnostic evaluation of Autism Spectrum Disorder and how this relates to clinicians’ diagnostic certainty.

Charlottesville is also a neat place to explore. It has nature trails and rolling hills to hike, college-town energy, restaurants to enjoy, and lots of stimulating intellectual and cultural life to celebrate. Stay interested in our Dev Peds program here at UVA. Here is a great place to learn and live.

Brandon Sultán, MD, PGY-4

My name is Brandon Sultán. My educational journey has brought me all across the country. I did my pediatrics residency at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). I graduated from the Howard University College of Medicine, in Washington DC. I have two Master’s Degrees, one in Narrative Medicine and one in Bioethics, both of which are from Columbia University, my hometown of New York. As well, I received my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and Political Science from Tufts University, up in Boston.

In addition to my work in Pediatrics, I have a strong interest in the Medical Humanities. I am the founding editor-in-chief of the Voices in Bioethics journal. As well I am on the editorial board of The Intima, a journal of Narrative Medicine. Some of my work includes the co-authored book chapter on “Team-Building Skills and Enhancing Competencies in Health-Care Professions,” featured in the book Keeping Reflections Fresh: A Practical Guide for Clinical Educators, as well as conducting Narrative Medicine Workshops in a variety healthcare setting domestically and abroad.

What attracted me to UVA Dev Peds is that it is uniquely position to provide a wealth of learning and clinical opportunities. Firstly, UVA’s program emphasizes core development and behavioral pediatrics, with emphasis on psychometric testing and psychopharmacology. For fellows looking to expand their clinical scope, there are well established opportunities in complex care, neuromuscular, rehabilitation, trauma-informed care, refugee and international work.

Having lived all of my life in the North East or California, my family felt Virginia was the perfect place to settle. Charlottesville, offers a historic and beautiful campus nestled in cozy academic town, with a diverse food scene and tons of outdoor activities, while still being a stones throw away from bigger cities!

As my family, friends, colleagues and patients will attest, I love to chat! So please feel free to reach out to me about the program!
