Division of Neonatology Visiting Resident Rotation

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a vibrant, dynamic environment where each day brings the joy of caring for a diverse and resilient group of newborns. From tiny preemies to full-term infants with special needs, our dedicated team supports families and celebrates every milestone, creating a compassionate and uplifting atmosphere.

• The objective of our NICU program is to provide residents from external institutions with comprehensive exposure to the University of Virginia’s NICU. Our program is designed with a dual focus: delivering robust clinical education and teaching, while also offering mentorship and career development opportunities.

• Neonatal transport supervision of the Newborn Emergency Transport System (NETS) throughout the Mid-Atlantic region
• Extracorporeal life support (ECMO) performed in the NICU
• Prenatal and antenatal maternal consultations
• Neuro-NICU in collaboration with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Developmental Pediatrics and Radiology
• NICU Follow-up Clinic in collaboration with the Division of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics
• Telemedicine consultations with referring physicians/special care nurseries.

• Applications will be considered based on merit and availability
• Applicants must be in good standing at an ACGME accredited residency program and plan to complete neonatology fellowship training
• Applicants should apply in their second year or later during the winter preceding their application to fellowship
• All applications must be received at least 60 days prior to the desired rotation start date due to licensing restrictions
• Applicants must complete background check and employee health requirement forms
