What is the Neonatal APP Transition to Practice Program?

Placing PICC lineThe UVA Health Children’s Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Transition to Practice Program is a one-year post-graduate program designed to provide support to new hire APPs.  This innovative program welcomes physician assistants and neonatal nurse practitioners to apply for a position in a supportive learning environment that builds confidence in practicing in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Mission

The mission of the UVA Health Children’s Neonatal APP Transition to Practice Program is to offer a comprehensive framework and strategies that support newly hired APPs as they transition from academia to clinical practice. Our goal is to prepare APPs with the medical knowledge, critical thinking skills, and procedural expertise necessary for excellence in neonatal critical care. This program is rooted in a foundation of organizational orientation, hands-on clinical practice, mentorship, and the promotion of professional development and wellness.

Components of the APP Transition to Practice Program

  1. Clinical Mentorship – Experienced APPs and Neonatologists provide hands-on training in critical care skills, including delivery room management, neonatal procedures, and the principles of neonatal critical care management.
  2. Didactic Learning – The didactic component is divided into twoPlacing central line phases: Boot Camp and the Neonatal Core Curriculum. Boot Camp covers essential topics such as perinatal concepts, basic fluid and electrolyte management, an introduction to ventilation and blood gas analysis, sepsis management, and the transition from fetal to neonatal circulation. The Neonatal Core Curriculum spans 6-9 months and includes in-depth classes led by experienced APPs, neonatologists, neonatology fellows, and other members of the multidisciplinary team at UVA Health.
  3. Evaluation – Evaluation encompasses simulation exercises, skills assessments, and ongoing evaluation of learning. Additionally, participants complete quarterly surveys to track progress on core neonatal management milestones.
