Diagnostic Radiology/Pediatric Radiology (DR/PR) Pathway

The 15-month combined Diagnostic Radiology/Pediatric Radiology pathway to dual certification is available to all diagnostic radiology residents. At UVA, residents begin the program in their 3rd year.

There are two types of 15-month pathways for Pediatric Radiology training available to Diagnostic Radiology residents. This new pathway offered by the American Board of Radiology allows residents to seek subspecialty certification in Pediatric Radiology during residency without extending training. The traditional pathway offered through the American Board of Radiology involves residents completing an additional year of training in the form of a pediatric radiology fellowship. Both pathways are available for UVA DR residents.

To complete the 15-month pathway, a resident must spend a total of 15 months of their DR residency in Pediatric Radiology and associated rotations. Four months of Pediatric Radiology are included for every resident in a DR program, and count towards the 15 months of experience.

Of the remaining 11 months required for pathway completion, the majority of time will be spent in Pediatric Radiology. Four months will be spent in associated imaging sections that offer additional exposure to pediatric imaging. Examples include neuroradiology, musculoskeletal, nuclear medicine, and cardiac/vascular imaging.
