Bio

Andrew E. Muck, MD, MBA is the chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he served as an emergency medicine physician with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has also served as a consultant with the World Health Organization (WHO), where he helped develop the Community First Aid Response Course for resource-limited areas. Before joining UVA in June 2023, he was a professor and held various leadership roles at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. While there, he helped launch the city’s first civilian emergency medicine residency and developed global health programs for residents. He also founded the San Antonio Refugee Health Clinic, which provides free health care to refugees.

Dr. Muck’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University, a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and an MBA from the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at Brooke Army Medical Center and Wilford Hall Medical Center. Muck’s work has earned him recognition, including the University of Texas Presidential Teaching Excellence Award. His clinical and research interests include global health, medical education, and trauma and mass casualty management.
