Dr. Layng is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and head of the Emergency Medicine Clinical Informatics Section. He received his Bachelor of Science with honors in Biology from Moravian College and earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from VCOM in Blacksburg, VA. He completed his emergency medicine residency at VCU in Richmond, VA and finished up his training at UVA by completing his Clinical Informatics fellowship and is now dually board certified in Emergency Medicine and Clinical Informatics. He currently serves as the Assistant Clinical Medicine Informatics Officer (ACMIO) for Emergency Medicine, where he co-leads the EM Design committee—a governance group dedicated to optimizing Epic EHR functionality and operational workflows within the Emergency Department.
Beyond his administrative leadership, Dr. Layng is the Program Director for the Clinical Informatics ACGME fellowship at UVA and has been instrumental in building the department’s Clinical Informatics section from the ground up.
Dr. Layng’s research and academic contributions focus on the intersection of medical education, patient safety, and informatics. His published work, appearing in journals such as Academic Medicine and The Western Journal of Emergency Medicine, explores:
- Patient safety event reporting and system-level improvements.
- The development of electronic procedure logs for clinical tracking.
- The use of personalized dashboards to drive informed self-improvement in medical training.
His professional focus remains dedicated to enhancing high-quality acute care through the thoughtful integration of technological systems and quality improvement initiatives.
