Welcome to the University of Virginia Anesthesiology Residency! We are excited to share with our 2023-2024 anesthesiology applicants why UVA Anesthesiology is a wonderful training program.
At the University of Virginia, we care for a diverse group of patients from the entire Mid-Atlantic region. Our residents provide anesthesia for a wide variety of complex and cutting-edge procedures. With no intraoperative fellows, UVA residents are the primary providers for all anesthetic procedures including cardiac, liver and lung transplantation, high-risk obstetric procedures, and pediatric cardiothoracic surgeries. Additionally our residents are exposed to complex patients in multiple ICU’s as well as in the outpatient setting while working in UVA’s pain management center. Our residents work closely with dedicated faculty anesthesiologists who teach the art of clinical care as well as provide robust didactic education.
At the completion of training, UVA residents are highly skilled consultants prepared to manage any case they encounter in private practice, or they are well positioned to apply to a variety of competitive fellowships. About half our graduates pursue fellowships in Chronic Pain Management, Pediatric Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Critical Care, Regional Anesthesia, and Obstetrics Anesthesia. The other half of our graduates are sought out to fill private practice jobs as general anesthesiologists across the United States.
In addition to our exceptional clinical experience, Our favorite feature of the UVA Anesthesiology program is the sense of family among the residents, faculty, and staff. This is a reflection of UVA Health and the greater Charlottesville community. Our residents benefit from working amongst a tight knit group of colleagues who care for and support each other both in and outside the operating room. With a well-developed wellness program that includes mentorship Pods, a wellness curriculum, and retreats, our residents enjoy spending time together both in and out of the hospital.
Charlottesville is a wonderful place to live. Due to the presence of a large university, our town is more vibrant and full of opportunities than you might expect from a small Virginian city! There are countless fantastic restaurants and local vineyards, breweries, and cideries where one can relax on a sunny day. Charlottesville is less than an hour away from Shenandoah National Park as well as world class cycling, rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, and many other outdoor activities. Finally, it is just a few hours away from Baltimore, Richmond, and Washington DC with a great local airport providing easy access to travel.
We came for its excellence in clinical training and the charm of this small city nestled in the shadow of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Ultimately, we found a home at the University of Virginia. We look forward to welcoming you into our anesthesia family!
