This 12-month internship begins in early August of each year. Official start dates are dependent upon the annual hospital orientation schedule. Our program utilizes a rolling admission process that opens on January 1st and closes on April 30^th. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Qualified applicants will be scheduled for interviews with program faculty.

Yes. A candidate for admission must be an ARRT credentialed radiographer, or enrolled in a radiography degree program with an anticipated test date. The test date may be as simple as the month and year of your graduation. You must have passed you ARRT radiology boards and be a certified Radiology Technician RT (R) prior to start date of the program.

We believe that the professional efforts and education of a registered radiologic technologist should be acknowledged, respected, and compensated. As such, we are proud to offer the Charles J. Tegtmeyer Interventional Radiology and Special Procedures Internship as a one-year paid internship. Interns will enter into a one year wage contract at a rate set by the medical center, taking into account prior diagnostic experience if applicable.

No. Upon completion of their training, interns may apply for available technologist positions in the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology but they will not be guaranteed employment. If an intern is hired into a vascular interventional technologist role at UVA, they will be compensated as a vascular interventional technologist after completion of the program.

Vascular interventional technologists are essential contributors to the dynamic team required to care for patients undergoing interventional procedures. Caring for these patients requires technologists that are proficient in all facets of patient care including vascular anatomy and pathology, equipment and instrumentation, and procedures. This proficiency must come from structured core curriculum and clinical instruction rather than exposure to an IR department.

We believe that the promotion of formal instruction through internships or other programs strengthens the quality and safety of care that patients are receiving as well as elevates the role of the vascular interventional technologist.

We believe that by requiring minimal educational standards, and making structured education and clinical instruction available to credentialed radiologic technologists, we can improve IR team care of patients, accelerate the practice and evolution of the field of IR, improve employee engagement, and improve career advancement opportunities and colleague collaboration and recognition.

Our internship properly prepares technologists for both their ARRT VI board exam, as well as the rigors of a career in interventional radiology.

The current pass rate for the ARRT VI board exam is 47%. Our internship boasts an ARRT VI board pass rate of 99%.

Interns are expected to be in attendance from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additionally, students will be required to cover evening, weekend, and holiday call with a technologist. Students earn Paid Time Off to be used both as vacation and sick time as needed.

In addition to their clinical hours, interns are expected to take call as part of their clinical education. Call is evenly assigned on a rotational basis. Interns receive additional financial compensation for hours worked on call.

As this is a paid internship, there is no tuition cost associated with the program. However, interns will be required to enroll in a professional organization to acquire the 16 structured continuing education credits required by the ARRT to sit for their VI board. Interns will assume responsibility for this nominal fee. Comprehensive textbooks will be recommended, but not required. Core curriculum instruction and materials will be provided by the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.

Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month internship, the University of Virginia Health System Department of Radiology awards students a certificate in recognition of their competency in Interventional Radiology.

Interns will qualify for health insurance and benefits for the duration of their one-year contract with the Medical Center.
